I remember back in the days of middle school when our teachers were trying to get basic concepts across to us.
They’d correct our grammar, help us formulate answers for ourselves, and engage us in a quest for education.
And then, I remember the teacher that blew a fuse one day because she hated the word, “assume.” In big, bold letters, upon the chalkboard she wrote:
ASSUME = ASS + U + ME
And, she said, “We should never assume, because to assume is to make an ass out of “u” and “me.” It was – clever. Then came that little boy in the back who sheepishly raised in hand, and once having been called upon asked:
“Don’t you mean, ‘You and I’?”
Nice. Very nice.
So – if you ever find yourself the target of an attack on an assumption, just remember, proper grammar rules!!
